Preprimary 2 (PP2) – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya
Preprimary 2 is the second and final stage of Early Years Education under Kenya’s CBC, designed for children typically aged 5 years. It builds on the foundations laid in PP1, deepening learners’ competencies and preparing them for the transition into Grade 1 and formal primary schooling.
Course Overview
This course continues the holistic, play-based approach to learning while introducing slightly more structured activities to strengthen readiness for primary school. Learners are guided to consolidate literacy, numeracy, and social skills through exploration, hands-on activities, and purposeful play, with greater emphasis on independence and school-readiness skills.
Key Learning Areas
- Language Activities – advancing listening, speaking, pre-reading, and pre-writing skills, including letter recognition, phonics, and simple vocabulary use
- Mathematical Activities – strengthening number recognition, counting, simple addition/subtraction concepts, shapes, measurement, and patterns
- Environmental Activities – expanding awareness of the community, safety, hygiene, weather, and basic environmental conservation
- Psychomotor and Creative Activities – refining fine and gross motor coordination through art, music, drama, and physical activities in preparation for writing and active learning
- Religious Education Activities – deepening moral and values-based formation (CRE, IRE, or HRE)
Approach
Teaching continues to be play-based and learner-centered, incorporating storytelling, songs, rhymes, group activities, and guided discovery. Continuous assessment monitors each child’s developmental milestones, with a growing focus on skills needed for a smooth transition to Grade 1, such as following instructions, working with peers, and basic self-management.
