Grade 3 – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya
Grade 3 is the final stage of Lower Primary education under Kenya’s CBC, designed for learners typically aged 8 years. It consolidates the literacy, numeracy, and life skills built across Grades 1 and 2, preparing learners for the transition to Upper Primary and the increased academic and personal independence it demands.
Course Overview
This course deepens learners’ mastery of foundational subjects while expanding their ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply knowledge to real-life situations. As the culminating year of Lower Primary, it places greater emphasis on consolidating core competencies and readiness for more subject-specific learning in Grade 4.
Key Learning Areas
- Literacy Activities – strengthening reading fluency, comprehension, composition writing, and oral communication in English and Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language
- Mathematical Activities – advancing number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, introduction to division), measurement, geometry, and data handling
- Environmental Activities – broadening understanding of the environment, community, hygiene, safety, and resource conservation

Approach
Instruction combines structured, subject-based lessons with hands-on activities, collaborative projects, storytelling, and practical application of concepts. Continuous formative assessment tracks each learner’s progress against defined competencies, helping teachers provide targeted support ahead of the transition to Upper Primary.
