Grade 1 – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya
Grade 1 marks the beginning of Lower Primary education under Kenya’s CBC, designed for learners typically aged 6 years. It builds on the foundation laid in Preprimary 1 and 2, transitioning children from largely play-based learning into more structured, subject-based instruction while retaining a strong emphasis on active, learner-centered engagement.
Course Overview
This course develops learners’ foundational literacy, numeracy, and life skills through practical, activity-based lessons. Emphasis is placed on building competencies that learners can apply in real life, alongside nurturing curiosity, creativity, and positive values, as they adjust to the routines and expectations of formal primary schooling.
Key Learning Areas
- Literacy Activities – developing foundational reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English and Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language
- Mathematical Activities – building number sense, counting, addition, subtraction, measurement, and basic geometric concepts
- Environmental Activities – exploring the immediate environment, hygiene, safety, and basic environmental care
- Religious Education – nurturing moral, spiritual, and values-based development (CRE)
- Creative Activities – developing artistic, musical, and craft skills for self-expression
- Physical and Health Education – promoting movement, coordination, and healthy habits
- Indigenous Language Activities – where applicable, introducing mother-tongue/indigenous language competencies
Approach
Lessons combine guided instruction with hands-on, play-integrated activities, storytelling, songs, and group work. Continuous formative assessment tracks each learner’s progress against defined competencies, replacing traditional high-stakes exams, and helps teachers tailor support to individual needs.
