Grade 2 – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya
Grade 2 is the second stage of Lower Primary education under Kenya’s CBC, designed for learners typically aged 7 years. It builds on the literacy, numeracy, and life skills developed in Grade 1, deepening subject knowledge while continuing to nurture curiosity, creativity, and strong values.
Course Overview
This course strengthens learners’ foundational academic skills through more structured, subject-based instruction, while maintaining an activity-based, learner-centered approach. Learners are guided to apply what they learn to real-life situations, building confidence, independence, and a love for learning as they progress toward Grade 3.
Key Learning Areas
- Literacy Activities – advancing reading fluency, comprehension, writing, and oral communication in English and Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language
- Mathematical Activities – strengthening number operations (addition, subtraction, simple multiplication), measurement, shapes, and data handling
- Environmental Activities – deepening understanding of the environment, community, hygiene, and safety practices
- Religious Education – furthering moral, spiritual, and values-based growth (CRE, IRE, or HRE)
- Creative Activities – enhancing artistic, musical, and craft skills for self-expression
- Physical and Health Education – building coordination, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle habits
- Indigenous Language Activities – where applicable, reinforcing mother-tongue/indigenous language skills
Approach
Learning continues through a blend of guided instruction, hands-on activities, storytelling, group work, and practical application. Continuous formative assessment tracks progress against defined competencies, allowing teachers to identify individual strengths and areas needing support, without reliance on high-stakes testing.
