Grade 4 – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Kenya
Grade 4 marks the beginning of Upper Primary education under Kenya’s CBC, designed for learners typically aged 9 years. It builds on the strong foundation laid in Lower Primary, introducing more distinct, subject-based learning as learners develop greater academic independence, analytical thinking, and practical skills.
Course Overview
This course transitions learners into a more structured curriculum with clearly defined subjects, while retaining CBC’s emphasis on activity-based, competency-driven learning. Learners are encouraged to explore subjects in greater depth, apply knowledge practically, and begin developing areas of interest that may inform future pathway choices.
Key Learning Areas
- English and Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language – advancing reading, writing, comprehension, grammar, and oral communication
- Mathematics – strengthening number operations, fractions, geometry, measurement, and data handling
- Science and Technology – introducing scientific inquiry, basic technology concepts, and exploration of living and non-living things
- Social Studies – building knowledge of Kenya’s history, geography, citizenship, and governance
- Religious Education – deepening moral, spiritual, and values-based development (CRE)
- Agriculture – introducing basic agricultural practices and food security concepts

Approach
Learning combines subject-focused instruction with practical, hands-on activities, projects, discussions, and collaborative tasks. Continuous formative assessment evaluates learners against defined competencies across subjects, supporting individualized feedback and preparing learners for the increasing academic demands of Grades 5 and 6.
